Interlocking paving stone driveways, exposed aggregate, stamped concrete, and natural stone walkways — designed to create a stunning first impression and built to handle decades of Calgary winters.
Your driveway is the first thing guests — and potential buyers — see when they arrive. A well-designed driveway and front walkway system dramatically elevates your home's curb appeal and resale value while setting the stage for everything beyond the front door.
At Rundle Landscaping, we specialize in interlocking paving stone driveways and walkways — our favourite material for Calgary's climate because individual pavers handle freeze-thaw cycles far better than poured concrete, and individual pieces can be repaired without disturbing the entire surface. We also work with exposed aggregate concrete and other materials based on your goals and budget.
Calgary's climate is brutal on poured concrete driveways. Hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles per year, road salt tracking, and ground movement from frost cause concrete to crack, spall, and heave — often within 10–15 years. Interlocking paving stone driveways flex with the ground, and individual damaged pavers can be replaced without disturbing the rest of the surface. They're also significantly more attractive, with dozens of colour, texture, and pattern options. We'll always give you an honest recommendation for your specific situation.
Proper excavation depth, compacted road crush sub-base, concrete edge restraints, and properly graded bedding sand. The base is what makes or breaks a driveway — we never cut corners on it.
We carry an extensive range of paver colours, textures, and sizes. From classic charcoal herringbone to multi-tone tumbled cobblestone — we'll help you find the look that complements your home perfectly.
Every base system is designed specifically for Calgary's frost depth and annual ground movement cycles. Proper bedding depth and drainage prevent heaving so your driveway stays level for decades.
When we design a driveway, we consider the full picture — matching walkway materials, front steps with paver borders, and tying in your front landscaping for a cohesive, intentional look.
If a paving stone is ever damaged by a heavy vehicle, a tree root, or ground shifting, individual pieces can be removed and replaced without disturbing the rest of the driveway. Concrete and asphalt cannot offer this.

For Calgary's climate, we strongly favour interlocking paving stone over poured concrete. Calgary experiences hundreds of freeze-thaw cycles annually, and poured concrete is prone to cracking, spalling, and heaving over time — especially with road salt. Paving stone flexes with ground movement, individual damaged pieces are replaceable, and the end result is significantly more visually appealing. The initial cost is higher, but the long-term value is substantially better.
For a residential driveway in Calgary, we typically excavate 10–12 inches (250–300mm) to account for the sub-base, bedding sand, and paver thickness. The depth varies depending on soil conditions and drainage needs on your specific property — which we assess during the free estimate visit.
Sand is always safe on paving stone. Traditional rock salt (sodium chloride) is fine in moderate use but can slowly affect polymeric sand joints over time. We recommend calcium chloride or magnesium chloride ice melters as a gentler alternative. We seal all our driveways before handoff which provides an additional layer of protection against deicers and staining.
New driveway access points from the street or any driveway work within the city right-of-way typically requires a permit from the City of Calgary. Driveway replacements within your property generally do not. We'll advise you during the estimate on exactly what permits, if any, are needed for your project.
We use these terms interchangeably, but generally: a "walkway" refers to the primary pedestrian path from the street or driveway to your front door — typically wider (3–4 feet) and built with the same base standards as a driveway. A "pathway" or "garden path" is usually a secondary route through the yard — potentially narrower and sometimes built with stepping stones or flagstone set in gravel. We build both beautifully.
"We replaced our cracked asphalt driveway with a paving stone driveway and matching front walkway. The difference to our home's curb appeal is unreal — it looks like a completely different house. Rundle guided us through every paver selection and the crew worked efficiently and cleanly. Couldn't be more pleased."
"Our old concrete driveway was full of cracks and had started to heave in two spots. Rundle tore it out and replaced it with a beautiful two-tone interlocking driveway with border detail. The install was fast and their cleanup was immaculate. Three winters later and it looks absolutely perfect."
