Custom pergolas, arbours, and privacy structures that define your outdoor rooms, provide shade and seclusion, and add stunning architectural character to any backyard.
A pergola transforms a flat, open backyard into a defined outdoor living space. Whether attached to your home over a deck or patio, or standing free in the yard as a focal point, a well-built pergola changes how you experience and use your outdoor area entirely.
At Rundle Landscaping, we design and build pergolas that are engineered for Calgary's climate — properly anchored to resist chinook winds, built with quality materials that resist moisture and UV, and finished with the kind of detail work that makes a structure look truly custom rather than store-bought.
All our pergola footings are designed for Calgary's chinook conditions — concrete-set posts, proper footing depth below frost line, and reinforced connection hardware throughout.
Decorative post caps, shaped rafter tails, corbel brackets, and lattice options — we build pergolas that look custom, not prefab, from every angle.
Planning to add string lights, a ceiling fan, or outdoor speakers? We can run conduit and rough wiring during construction so you're ready to connect anytime.
Horizontal slat walls, decorative lattice panels, and climbing vine trellises can be integrated into any pergola design to create true seclusion from neighbours.
When we build your deck, we can engineer the framing to support a pergola perfectly — no bolted-on afterthought look. One team, one cohesive result.
Detailed, itemized estimates with no hidden costs. The price we quote is the price you pay — always.
A look at some of our custom pergola and privacy screen builds across Calgary and area.
A pergola has an open lattice or rafter roof that provides partial shade and defines a space without enclosing it. A gazebo has a solid roof and is typically a complete, enclosed structure. Pergolas are much more common in Calgary because they allow airflow while still creating that defined "room" feel — and they're generally more cost-effective to build.
In most cases, a freestanding pergola in your backyard doesn't require a permit if it's under a certain size. Attached pergolas (connected to your home's structure) almost always require a development permit with structural details. We'll assess exactly what's needed for your project and handle the permit process if required.
There are several great options: horizontal cedar slat panels (very modern look), decorative lattice panels, outdoor fabric curtains, bamboo screens, and climbing vine trellises. We can design these into the pergola structure from the start so they look intentional and architectural — not like something you hung up afterwards.
Cedar has that warm, natural look and smells incredible — but requires staining every 2–3 years to maintain its colour and protect against moisture. Vinyl/composite pergolas are virtually maintenance-free but have a more uniform, less natural appearance. Aluminum pergolas are the most durable and wind-resistant with minimal maintenance. We'll help you choose based on your budget, aesthetic, and how much maintenance you want to do.
Absolutely — this is actually a very common project for us. We can add a pergola to an existing deck (provided the deck structure can support the post footings) or anchor a freestanding pergola with concrete footings directly through or beside a patio. We'll assess your existing structure during the estimate to determine the best approach.
"Rundle built a beautiful cedar pergola with horizontal privacy slats over our deck. The craftsmanship is genuinely impressive — every joint is tight, the post caps are perfectly centred, and it looks like it was designed by an architect. We use our backyard every single day now."
"We had a bare concrete pad that we never used. Rundle built a freestanding vinyl pergola over it with a curtain track system. Now it's our favourite spot. The pergola went up in four days and survived last winter's chinooks without a budge."
